Here comes the sun


Any sun would be nice. After last weeks Mangere Mountain 32km trek, we really are looking for some kind of break. Did we sign up for long grueling runs, with hills, rain, hail and just a little wind ? It must have been in the fine print. Our marketing team have mastered their KPIs. Well stay with us. Have we got a deal for you.

This Sunday 17th our regular YMCA Club Run, will start from the Akoranga Drive, North Shore YMCA. The chance for Auckland Marathoners to famaliarise yourself with the first part of the race day course. The usual start times apply, but do note the change of venue. The Shore YMCA Gym is not open until 7:30, so walkers will not have access prior to leaving. It is best to either park on the road, or across the road at the Sports clubrooms. Parking outside the gym is reserved for the regular members. Gear bags should be left in your car, until you return for a shower. Relleke should have the Leppin recovery drink ready and do stock up on your race fuel like the Clif Bars Gels & Bloks for the road ahead. Finding a good coffee shop nearby doesn't seem to be, too much of a challenge for most groups. The Grey's Ave YMCA is closed Sunday 17th.

The Auckland Marathon early group discount entries, finishes on September 15. Discounts will still apply to the standard entries, but they won't be as good. Refer to the procedure on our website  YMCA Marathon.org.nz/auckland-marathon-entry Enter your details on our web page and pay the appropriate amount for your event, into our club bank  account 02-0280-0341212-04. Once the entry fee is paid, you will receive your unique discount code to register and enter though the Auckland Marathon website Auckland Marathon/events/select-race  Sign in and add your personal details and select Team Information: The Auckland YMCA Marathon Club. P/w YMCA and add any extra purchases and agree to the event liability waivers. 

Have a look at the map for the 27km course this week. Down Lake Rd to Devonport Village, out along the marathon course & back past Northcote Rd, to Shakespeare Rd - Smales Farm. Down past the 'Y' to Onewa Rd & then work your way back. Map My Run.com/Marathon Half marathoners return along Northcote Road and back to Akoranga Drive YMCA. Map My Run/Half

Athletics Auckland Road Relays are on at Mt Smart Stadium on Sat. Sept. 16. The seasons combined Prize Giving of the Cross Country and Road Champs will follow the day's racing at Mt Smart. Trophies, Certificates and Spot Prizes for eligible competitors will be presented in the John Walker Lounge after 3:30pm.

Next Sunday Sept. 24 the Devonport Half Marathon starts from Windsor Reserve, King Edward Parade, Devonport. This should be an ideal race pace event, in the build up to Auckland Marathon. Daylight Saving starts so expect some better running conditions. For those coming along to the Greys Ave YMCA, we are back into the long runs, Titirangi 32km Map My Run.com/routes/Marathon Half Map My Run.com/routes/Half

The 10K Summer Series in the Auckland Domain will be back on Thursday September 28. Come along, encourage others to try an achievable event, with distances to suit all fitness levels. At 5.30 the walkers start and 6pm for runners. The Webscorer timing system will be operating, so everyone can keep track of their improving fitness. Our regular sponsors should be back for another season. That means plenty of spot prizes. Volunteer to help at the start or finish or one of the other duties if you are not participating. Enjoyment is the focus. Be sure to promote this event around your work place or exercise groups.  YMCA Marathon.org.nz/summer-10k-series

Looking forward to our visit to the North Shore. Chin up, old chap. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets. We shall continue to fight in the hills. We may bend, but we shall never surrender. ( Saw that somewhere ) Let's be careful out there.
